The Junk We Save

I don’t know about you, but I have a junk drawer.  Often it is filled to the brim with papers that need time to attend to and things that need to find their more permanent place in our home.  Other times items are in the drawer because I’m not ready to throw them out yet.

I was on a walk the other day and saw a pile of junk.  Trash parts from broken down bicycles.  It was interesting to me, since I am not a bike mechanic, that I couldn’t see the value in this collection of junk.

And yet, you may notice there is a green wire connecting the pieces.  What I know about Vietnam is that there is someone that will be coming along to collect these parts and deliver them to where they have value.  Where they can be repurposed and be used well.

And isn’t that just like us?

“But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” – Romans 5:8

While we were a pile of rubbish (dirty, broken, not in any way useful) God loved us enough to see the potential.  To pick us up and deliver us to a place where we can be repurposed (born into a new life).  Thank you Jesus!

Broken Down vs. What We Could Be

Have you ever felt empty? run down? plumb worn out?

This abandoned house reminds me that on our own, we sometimes don’t take care of ourselves the way we should.  We might neglect maintenance type things and then suddenly are are a broken down wreck of our former selves.

Consider the words of Paul to the Corinthians:

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?  You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.  So glorify God in your body.”

– 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Remember the precious gift that you are are.  The price that was paid to save you from sin.  Ask the Holy Spirit to guide and direct your choices, today and always.

When….

When was the last time you opened a new package of crayons or paints?  The anticipation of using these implements.  The smell of the item fresh from the packaging.

When was the last time you created visual art?  What medium did you use?

When was the last time you considered creation?

The beauty and majesty of a sunset…

God created it all including us, on purpose, for a purpose.  Lean into the purpose and find the beauty you were meant to be.

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.  Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” – Psalm 139:14

Strength When We are Weak

At the beach last year, we hoped in a van to tour the area.  On our way, we came across a herd of free range cattle.  I thought it was hilarious that this little guy was having a stand off with the van.

He didn’t seem at all fearful about the risks of standing in the road with oncoming traffic.  It seemed crazy to me.

The same could be said of the Christian life.  I often see people that should be cowering in a corner with all the challenges they are facing.

And yet, like this calf, they are standing tall in the face of danger.  Amazingly enough they are trusting in the One that holds their future in the palm of His hand.

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

Bending the Bar

I grew up in a part of the world where houses are stick built (i.e. from wood).  I now live in a part of the world where homes are built from poured concrete.  This means that within the concrete there needs to be something giving it support and directing it’s final form.

The other day I was walking and saw a construction worker bending and shaping bars.

IMG_0569 It was interesting to see him do these movements over and over.  Taking perfectly straight bars and bending them into the form that makes them most useful for this particular building.

IMG_0567

It got me to thinking…isn’t God just like that.  We might be perfectly acceptable to the world in the shape we are in and yet, to fulfill the purpose He has in mind, we are bent and reshaped.

IMG_0568We are changed into an image that is most useful for the plans the Master Builder has.  Friends I pray that you will allow the bending and changing to occur so that you will be all that God has designed for your life.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, Which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” – Ephesians 2:10

Let Your Light Shine

We see evidence of recycling and repurposing things every day.  There are many people driving around these vehicles collecting all manner of “trash”.  They sort and sell what they can to provide for their families.

IMG_0953

Recently I noticed a wall where the builder had creatively used broken glass to add protection at the top of a wall.

IMG_0549

Now bottles that weren’t broken would be sold back to a place that bottles drinks or possibly repurposed in a way that actually uses the bottle to hold something.  And yet in this application, the broken bottle gets a new life, a purpose beyond what the bottle maker may have imagined.

Not so with our creator, He created us with a purpose in mind.  Sometimes with free will we head off in a direction that isn’t within the will of our creator.  When that happens, we are often broken and humbled so that we can see the Father’s will for our lives.

Our calling and purpose is to reflect the love of the Son…like the glass on the wall reflects the light of the sun.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” – Matthew 5:16

Seeing God’s Love in Your Surroundings

Have you ever looked up in the sky and seen a cloud in the shape of a heart?  Or maybe in the springtime you’ve seen an image like this….

IMG_0013

Isn’t it awesome how the momma hen is created to know how to care for her young?

When I saw this image below, I had to snap a pic.  I noticed the heart immediately.  Upon closer inspection, the heart shape is broken out of an egg shell.

That got me thinking about how the egg shell must be broken in order for the new life (baby chick) to emerge.  Much like our old self must be broken before our new life in Christ can occur.  And isn’t that a picture of the greatest love of all?!?!?

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17
